Dr. Laura Bridgewater, Cancer Dementia & Muscle Function: A Potential Genetic Connection. The BMP2 gene encodes a protein that regulates bone, cartilage, and limb formation, heart development, and programmed cell death. Dr. Bridgewater has discovered genetic variants in this gene that demonstrate its involvement in muscle strength and endurance, as well as possible links to cancer and dementia.

Without the Noyce Scholarship awarded to me, I would have dropped out of school to earn money to pay for the necessities of life. I would have lost my job as Lab Assistant in UVU's Biology Lab, and the club I founded at UVU--Science Association of Women--would have had a less-certain future, impacting the experience of dozens of women in science at my university. Being raised by a teacher left me with a clear understanding of the very understated perception of this vital profession of our society. Growing up in one of the poorest-funded counties in the poorest education-funded state in the nation, I became familiar with what it takes for a teacher to stretch classroom and personal resources in order to provide for those who rely on them. Please know that I have used this money wisely, and that right now I'm writing this from the comforts of the humble home I was able to keep through a terrible economic recession. Dr. John Butler is currently a NIST Fellow and Group Leader of Applied Genetics in the Biochemical Science Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is a regular invited guest of the FBI's Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods and a member of the Department of Defense Quality Assurance Oversight Committee for DNA Analysis. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2011 he aided the DNA identification efforts. He is a member of the International Society of Forensic Genetics and serves as an Associate Editor for Forensic Science International.

Dr. Butler has received numerous awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2002), the Department of Commerce Gold Medal (2008), and the Scientific Prize of the International Society of Forensic Genetics (2003).

He has more than 100 publications describing aspects of forensic DNA testing and is one of the most prolific active authors in the field. Dr. Butler has been an invited speaker to numerous national and international forensic DNA meetings.
In addition to his busy scientific career, John Butler and his wife serve in their community and church and are the proud parents of six children, all of whom have been proven to be theirs through the power of DNA typing.
