David Clark from Intermountain Healthcare promotes the Nursing Department at Utah Valley University

Dr. Steve Wasserbaech, Physics Professor, Utah Valley University

Catherine Roberts is the Particulate Matter Program Coordinator for EPA Region 8 which includes the States of Montana, Colorado, Utah, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. She is responsible for ensuring implementation of programs for attainment of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for PM10 and PM2.5. Over the past 26 years, she has worked in several program areas at EPA including the Clean Air Act, Superfund and Congressional Affairs. Prior to joining EPA, she worked for the California Air Resources Board as an Associate Air Pollution Specialist.

Dr. Laura Bridgewater, Cancer Dementia & Muscle Function: A Potential Genetic Connection. The BMP2 gene encodes a protein that regulates bone, cartilage, and limb formation, heart development, and programmed cell death. Dr. Bridgewater has discovered genetic variants in this gene that demonstrate its involvement in muscle strength and endurance, as well as possible links to cancer and dementia.

Dr. C. Arden Pope III is the Mary Lou Fulton Professor of Economics and Associate Dean (CFHSS) at Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University (1981) where he studied economics and statistics and was a Fellow in Environmental Health and Public Policy at the Harvard School of Public Health (1992/93). He has conducted research on a variety of issues related to natural resource and environmental economics. His cross-disciplinary research in environmental epidemiology has resulted in seminal studies on the effects of air pollution on pulmonary and cardiovascular health. Dr. Pope has conducted or collaborated on key studies of short- and long-term air pollution exposure which have influenced environmental public health policy and air pollution standards in the U.S., and worldwide. He has also played prominent roles in reviewing and interpreting this literature, and is one of the world's most widely cited and recognized experts on the health effects of air pollution.

Dr. Jaron Hansen is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Brigham Young University and a Research Scientist at Anaerobic Digestion Technology. His research interests include renewable energy, kinetics and spectroscopy of atmospherically important molecules and their degradation products and issues surrounding general air quality.

Kent Udell grew up in Lehi, Utah. He earned his B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Utah State University and his M.S. and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah. With appointments in both Mechanical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering, he taught engineering at the University of California, Berkeley for 26 years, serving as the Director of the Berkeley Environmental Restoration Center, as the chair of the campus-wide hazardous waste management committee, and as vice-chair, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Currently, he is Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley and a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah, as well as the Director of the University of Utah's new Sustainability Research Center. His research interests include sustainable energy engineering, ethics and thermodynamics.

Dr. Michelle Hofmann, MD, MPH is medical director of the Primary Children's Medical Center Pediatric Unit at Riverton Hospital. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah and teaches a medical student elective on Human Health and the Environment. Dr. Hofmann is the current President of Breathe Utah and has participated in numerous multi-stakeholder collaborations, including the Utah Clean School Bus Project, Idle Free Utah, Salt Lake Solutions Air Partners, the Clear the Air Challenge, the Utah Asthma Task Force and the Mountain View Corridor's Air Quality Working Group. She is an active member of the Utah Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Utah Medical Association, advancing environmental health initiatives with both organizations. She was recognized by the Utah Medical Association in 2009 with their annual Environmental Award. Michelle is on the Board of Directors for the Utah Clean Cities Coalition and served as Co-President of Utah Moms for Clean Air from 2009 to 2010. She has written public comments advocating for stronger National Ambient Air Quality Standards and has spoken to numerous audiences along the Wasatch Front regarding the health impacts of air pollution.

Without the Noyce Scholarship awarded to me, I would have dropped out of school to earn money to pay for the necessities of life. I would have lost my job as Lab Assistant in UVU's Biology Lab, and the club I founded at UVU--Science Association of Women--would have had a less-certain future, impacting the experience of dozens of women in science at my university. Being raised by a teacher left me with a clear understanding of the very understated perception of this vital profession of our society. Growing up in one of the poorest-funded counties in the poorest education-funded state in the nation, I became familiar with what it takes for a teacher to stretch classroom and personal resources in order to provide for those who rely on them. Please know that I have used this money wisely, and that right now I'm writing this from the comforts of the humble home I was able to keep through a terrible economic recession.
